India and China Ð the inheritors of two ancient civilizations and aeons of neighbourly bonds cemented by Buddhism and the bridge-building missions of Fa-Hien, Huen Tsang, Tagore and Kotnis Ð never witnessed strife between themselves till the fateful autumn of 1962, when they fought a short but bitter border war on the desolate heights of the Himalayas. Mutual suspicion and sporadic face-offs have ever since bedevilled relations between the two Asian giants, based on their still-unsettled borders. What caused the tragic estrangement of AsiaÕs leading lights? In this cogent and comprehensive analysis, the author traces the origins of the discord to a legacy flawed by the flip-flops of imperial BritainÕs unilateral border delineation, and the ebbs and flows of Chinese activism in Tibet. The gripping narrative carries us from the post-1947 scenario of initial Panchsheel bonhomie, yielding place to mutual distrust, aggravated, among other causes, by Chinese paranoia over Tibet and the unrelenting pressure of Indian public opinion. IndiaÕs cataclysmic defeat in the war, which remains a young nationÕs humiliation, is attributed to the ill-advised Ôforward policyÕ and failure of the politico-military leadership of the time, revalidating ClemenceauÕs adage, that Ôwar is too important a matter to be left to generalsÕ..

Feared by conservatives and embraced by liberals when he entered the White House, Barack Obama has since been battered by criticism from both sides. In Out of Many, One, Ruth O’Brien explains why. We are accustomed to seeing politicians supporting either a minimalist state characterized by unfettered capitalism and individual rights or a relatively strong welfare state and regulatory capitalism. Obama, O’Brien argues, represents the values of a lesser-known third tradition in American political thought that defies the usual left-right categorization. Bearing traces of Baruch Spinoza, John Dewey, and Saul Alinsky, Obama’s progressivism embraces the ideas of mutual reliance and collective responsibility, and adopts an interconnected view of the individual and the state. So, while Obama might emphasize difference, he rejects identity politics, which can create permanent minorities and diminish individual agency. Analyzing Obama’s major legislative victories—financial regulation, health care, and the stimulus package—O’Brien shows how they reflect a stakeholder society that neither regulates in the manner of the New Deal nor deregulates. Instead, Obama focuses on negotiated rule making and allows executive branch agencies to fill in the details when dealing with a deadlocked Congress. Similarly, his commitment to difference and his resistance to universal mandates underlies his reluctance to advocate for human rights as much as many on the Democratic left had hoped. By establishing Obama within the context of a much longer and broader political tradition, this book sheds critical light on both the political and philosophical underpinnings of his presidency and a fundamental shift in American political thought..

Electronic Genie takes its readers on a two-century journey that begins with Antoine Lavoisiter's prediction of the existence of silicon as an element. It traces the emergence of silicon as key to the development of most forms of today's electronics and its role in making possible the revolutionary digital computer. Loaded with information about such original thinkers as Lavoisier, John Bardeen, Bill Gates, Patrick Haggerty, Gordon Moore, and many more, the volume traces the use of silicon in metallurgy, as a diode rectifier in wireless and radio, and ultimately as a nonlinear element for heterodyne mixing in radar during World War II. Electronic Genie will appeal to students of science and technology as well as to anyone interested in the history of these fields..

T.F. Walsh’s wufkin pack is a dangerous tribe of sexy, powerful shifter alphas who know how to get what they want in a world gone mad. Indulge your inner wolf with these stories of loyalty, lust, and love! Cloaked: When someone steals the endangered bear cubs she’s assigned to protect, wulfkin Daciana must locate them or lose her job and return home in disgrace. The sexy inspector on the case, Connell Lonescu, isn’t making this any easier. He’s convinced relationships are a waste of time, even if he is attracted to the secretive woman—and Daciana’s wulfkin rules forbid relationships with humans. Can they overcome these laws of nature to triumph in love? Cloaked in Fur: As a moonwulf, Daciana never imagined that she’d abandon her pack, endanger everyone around her, and break the worst rule possible. But a rogue werewolf is killing Daciana’s friends, and she’ll do whatever it takes to stop the beast. The police and her boyfriend, Inspector Connell Lonescu, are starting to question her involvement in the murders, which is endangering the pack’s secret existence. But when the pack alpha kidnaps Connell, Daciana must choose between saving the man she loves and saving her pack family from certain death. Cloaked in Secrecy: Enre Ulf, a former member of the ruling wulfkin tribe, plans to infiltrate Alena Novac’s circus clan and take out its alpha to save his home in Transylvania. Except he never expected his wolf to claim Alena as his mate or to feel compelled to save her brother, who was jailed for a murder he didn’t commit. With the police closing in and the blood feud threatening them, Alena and Enre must overcome their pasts to save their packs’ futures. Cloaked in Blood: Selena Kurt agrees to an arranged mating to protect her sister from a dangerous alpha from the enemy clan. To her surprise, her match is Marcin Ulf, the wulfkin who broke her heart years ago. Before they can be paired, however, they’re drawn into a tournament where Marcin will compete to free his imprisoned brother while Selena battles for the life of another wulfkin alpha. Both intend to seize this chance—even if it means facing off with one another just as their romance rekindles. Cloaked in Christmas: Wulfkin Cacey Varg’s new pack is suddenly no place to be this December. Her ex has discovered her location and is on his way to take their daughter back. But a massive snowstorm prevents her from packing up and leaving town—and instead delivers a sexy stranger, Vincent Lyall, to her doorstep. Can she trust that he isn’t one of her ex’s henchmen? Or will this be a merry Christmas after all? Cloaked in Sorcery: Telling fortunes at the infamous Bran Castle in Transylvania at Halloween should be a no-brainer…until Kalin Asen crosses paths with sexy Russian army commander Axe Vuk, who just might be her wulfkin soul mate. No way in hell would her fate lie with someone who wants her pack dead. But when the night takes a deadly turn and his team loses control of their inner wolves, it’s a race against time to stop them from chomping down on every human in the castle. Will Kalin and Axe survive long enough to discover the truth behind their primal passions? Sensuality Level: Sensual.
