Emotionally neglected by her mother, abandoned by her father, Mattie O’Rourke spent her childhood starved for the one thing she thought she’d never find: love. When her mother dies and, at twenty-two, she finds herself completely without ties of any kind, Mattie takes a chance at ending her loneliness and moves to a tiny coastal Florida town. At the Suwannee Swifty convenience store, a sea change envelops her. Mattie O’Rourke sees Proteus Nicholas Blue and their fate is sealed after only a few shy, stolen glances. Nick walks into Mattie’s life having fled his own. A lifelong fisherman from a remote island off the coast, Nick is haunted by the certain knowledge that the sea will be the death of him (as it has been for all the Blue men) and he has resolved to leave it behind. But as Nick and Mattie settle into an intimacy that both comforts and surprises them, Nick feels the inextricable pull of the waxing moon’s tide and the siren’s call of the dolphins that, Blue legend has it, are his brethren. And so it is that Mattie, who only months before felt that happiness would never find her, returns with Nick to the island home that nurtured him and finds herself embraced by a large and loving family and an alluring and sensual landscape. Life on Lethe is transforming for Mattie. But Nick always knew that the sea would claim him, and all of Mattie’s love cannot prevent the tragedy that is their destiny. Moving and enchanting, Remembering Blue is a lush story of love, loss, and the mythic power of the ocean, told in an elegant and passionate voice that could only come from Connie May Fowler. The aim of this book is to provide the student of Japanese with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember. It is intended not only for the beginner, but also for the more advanced student looking for some relief from the constant frustration of how to write the kanji and some way to systematize what he or she already knows. The author begins with writing because--contrary to first impressions--it is in fact the simpler of the two. He abandons the traditional method of ordering the kanji according to their frequency of use and organizes them according to their component parts or "primitive elements." Assigning each of these parts a distinct meaning with its own distinct image, the student is led to harness the powers of "imaginative memory" to learn the various combinations that result. In addition, each kanji is given its own key word to represent the meaning, or one of the principal meanings, of that character. These key words provide the setting for a particular kanji's "story," whose protagonists are the primitive elements. In this way, students are able to complete in a few short months a task that would otherwise take years. Armed with the same skills as Chinese or Korean students, who know the meaning and writing of the kanji but not their pronunciation in Japanese, they are now in a much better position to learn to read (which is treated in a separate volume). The Foundations of Remembering presents a collection of essays written by top memory scholars in honor of Henry L. Roediger III. The chapters were originally delivered as part of the "Roddyfest" conference held in March 2005 to celebrate Purdue University's awarding of an honorary doctor of letters to Roediger in recognition of his many contributions to the field of psychology. Authors were given a simple charge: choose your own topic, but place your work in historical context. Roediger is fascinated by the intellectual lineage of ideas, so addressing historical "foundations" seemed a fitting tribute. The Chapters contained in this volume help to establish the foundations of remembering, circa the first decade of the 21st century, as perceived by some of the leading memory researchers in the world. Not surprisingly, each of the chapters touches on Roediger's research as well, largely because his work has helped to define and clarify many topics of interest to the memory field. The Foundations of Remembering is intended for a wide audience: students, scholars, and anyone interested in exploring the historical and conceptual roots of modern memory theory..

This is the story of a young, first-time mother who was unprepared for the unimaginable- the possibility of losing her baby. It is a personal story that speaks of the author's experience of losing her baby daughter immediately after her birth. More importantly it is a story of the process she goes through to come to terms with her loss, to forgive herself and forgive others and to move on with her life. The author captures the pain, suffering and shock of the experience of losing her daughter after struggles getting pregnant. But what she also shares is hope-the road she took to heal that suffering. For anyone who has experienced something similar, this is a story of solidarity, but one that demonstrates that survival is possible. In a time that it seems that life cannot continue, when our worlds may be filled by the opposite of life and joy, there is a light. There is a beacon of hope..

The war of 1948 in Palestine is a conflict whose history has been written primarily from the national point of view. This book asks what happens when narratives of war arise out of personal stories of those who were involved, stories that are still unfolding. Efrat Ben-Ze'ev examines the memories of those who participated and were affected by the events of 1948, and how these events have been mythologized over time. This is a three-way conversation between Palestinian villagers, Jewish-Israeli veterans, and British policemen who were stationed in Palestine on the eve of the war. Each has his or her story to tell. These small-scale truths shed new light on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as it was then and as it has become..

There is magic to be found in this place so beautiful, it might be holy . . . El Canon de los Recuerdos. Here between the mountains, on the edge of the desert, in a remote area of Northern New Mexico, you must come expecting the miraculous: People around the village still spoke of the miracle of the flying sheep, even if they did not believe it to be true. They still spoke of the young Garcia girl and how she saw five sheep tumbled in the wind ahead of a thunderstorm, wool balls at the infinite mercy of God's hand. Dominga's parents and brothers, and most everyone else around Mi Ojo, believed that seven-year-old Dominga had been struck on the head by lightning that day. Even when the sheep were found dead five miles out in Recuerdos Canyon, their wool tinged with hues of purple and pink, like the tips of the clouds at sundown, people around Mi Ojo believed Dominga's story to be nonsense. The miracle, they said was that Dominga Garcia was alive at all, loco or not. But Dominga knew el milagro de Mi Ojo was the five flying sheep, even if her neighbors were too stubborn to acknowledge it.And even now, at forty-seven, the beautiful widow Dominga Garcia de Jesus hasn't stopped believing in miracles; she's just desperately in need of one.In an extraordinarily rich pageant of characters and cultures, through a landscape so palpable it breathes with a life of its own, Canyon of Remembering charts the soul's journey to find meaning, forgiveness, and most miraculous of all . . . love.".

At five years old, Julianne doesn’t want to move to George Town East, especially when she knows she’ll be separated from her best friend. Still, when Julianne’s dad tells her that the headless people that live in her closet and chase her down the hall won’t follow her to their new house, she starts to look forward to the move. George Town East is where Julianne will spend her childhood and adolescence in the 1970s and 1980s; in this memoir, she recalls a simpler time growing up there. Hot summer days, watching television with the family, riding bicycles, and going to the movies were all mainstays of daily life. This was a time before computers, before cell phones and when children growing up didn’t have a care in the world—except school, summer vacations and then becoming a teenager and falling in love for the first time. Join Julianne as she recalls awkward teenage moments, life in a small town, and a time that no longer exists in Remembering George Town East..

This brief charts out principles for a cultural psychology of remembering. The idea at its core is a conceptualization of remembering as a constructive process--something that occurs at the intersection of a person and their social-cultural world. To do this, it moves away from the traditional metaphor of memory as storage and develops the alternative metaphor of construction as part of wider social and cultural developments in society. This new approach is developed from key ideas of Lev Vygotsky and Frederic Bartlett, in particular their concepts of mediation and reconstructive remembering. From this foundation, the authors demonstrate how remembering is conflictual, evolving, and transformative at both the individual and collective level. This approach is illustrated with concrete case studies, which highlight key theoretical concepts moving from micro-level processes to macro-level social phenomena. Among the topics covered are: The microgenesis of memories in conversation The role of narrative mediation in the recall of history Remembering through social positions in conflicts Urban memory during revolutions How memorials are used to channel grief and collective memory Remembering as a Cultural Process traces our ongoing journey to answer the question of the different ways in which culture participates in and is constitutive of what it means for humans to remember. It will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in the fields of memory studies or cultural psychology..
